HOW IMPORTANT IS ORAL HEALTH IN THE CKCS?

There is a growing body of evidence that suggests a link between dental health and heart health in dogs. Understanding and appreciating this link is incredibly important when you own a Cavalier as they are already prone to heart related issues. Poor dental hygiene can lead to periodontal disease, which is an inflammation of the gums that can cause bacteria to enter the bloodstream.
This can lead to a condition known as bacterial endocarditis, which is an infection of the heart valves. Bacterial endocarditis can cause a range of symptoms, including fever, lethargy, coughing, and difficulty breathing. It can also lead to serious complications, such as heart failure and sepsis.

In addition to bacterial endocarditis, poor dental health can also contribute to other heart-related conditions in dogs. For example, periodontal disease can cause inflammation throughout the body, which can increase the risk of heart disease.

So, while there is a link between dental health and heart health in dogs, the exact nature of this relationship is still being studied. However, taking steps to maintain your dog's dental health, such as regular brushing and professional cleanings, can help reduce the risk of dental-related heart complications and make those puppy kisses much more enjoyable. Here are our suggestions for improving the oral health of even the most difficult dog:

  1. Brushing: Regular brushing of your dog's teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste made specifically for dogs can help remove plaque and prevent tartar buildup. Start by introducing your dog to the toothbrush and toothpaste gradually, and always be gentle when brushing. This beef flavored kit is an inexpensive and great way to introduce your puppy to brushing. If a standard toothbrush is too difficult, these handy fingertip covers are also fantastic for smaller dogs.
  2. Dental chews: Not all dental chews are created equal, so this is not a place to purchase the cheapest option. These choices that both our vet, and our dogs, have approved include Oravet Dental Hygene Chews, Virbac VeggieDent Tartar Control Chews, and Zesty Paw Dental Bones.
  3. Dental toys: Chew toys can help remove plaque and keep your dog's teeth clean. Look for toys and treats that are specifically designed to promote dental health. A few of our favorites include The PetSafe Busy Buddy Bristle Bone (also great for keeping you dog occupied), the Dog Treat Toy Ball (fill groves with small kibble or treats) and the Arm & Hammer Ora-Play products.
  4. Diet: Feeding your dog a healthy diet that is free from sugary treats and table scraps can help promote good dental health. Some foods, such as carrots and apples, can also help clean your dog's teeth naturally.
  5. Regular check-ups: Regular check-ups with your veterinarian can help detect any dental issues early on and prevent more serious problems from developing. When appropriate, consider regular dental cleanings by a veterinarian to help remove plaque and tartar buildup that may be difficult to remove at home. Your veterinarian may also recommend dental X-rays to assess the health of your dog's teeth and gums.

In closing, r
emember to always be patient and gentle when introducing new dental hygiene practices to your dog. With a little effort and consistency, you can help keep your dog's teeth healthy and strong and reduce both bad breath and the chance of more serious medical issues.
